Arizona window tint law, in plain English

Arizona is one of the friendlier tint states, but the rules are specific about which window is which. Here is the whole law as it applies to a passenger vehicle, without the statute language.

Windshield

Non-reflective tint above the manufacturer's AS-1 line only

That is the top band of the windshield. A sun strip up there is legal. Film across the whole windshield is not.

Front side windows

Must let more than 33% of visible light through

This is the number that matters most. A legal front shade still cuts serious heat and glare, especially in ceramic.

Back side windows

Any darkness

Behind the driver, Arizona does not set a limit. Limo-dark rear glass is legal.

Rear window

Any darkness

Also unlimited, with one catch: if the rear window is tinted, the vehicle needs working side mirrors on both sides.

Reflectivity rules in Arizona

Side window film cannot be more reflective than a standard window, with the statute capping mirror-like metallic films. This is another reason modern ceramic film is the easy answer: it gets its heat rejection from ceramic particles, not from a mirrored surface, so it never runs into the reflectivity rule.

Arizona medical exemptions

Arizona law allows darker front tint for drivers with a documented medical condition that requires protection from sunlight. If that is your situation, talk to your doctor about the paperwork first, then bring it to us and we will build the vehicle around it.

How we handle it in the 928

We install to the legal limit, and we tell you when a shade you are asking for is not legal on that window instead of installing it and letting you find out at a traffic stop. Darker is available where the law allows it, which in Arizona is most of the vehicle.

This guide is a plain-language summary, not legal advice. Statutes get amended, so if you need the letter of the law, check the current Arizona Revised Statutes on window tinting or ask us and we will point you to it.
