Can You Tint a Leased Car?

Short answer: usually yes. Window film is not a permanent change to the car. It goes on the inside of the glass and it comes off again. That is the reason tint is one of the few upgrades people put on a lease.

The longer answer has three parts: what your lease says, what shade you choose, and what happens when you hand the keys back.

Check the lease first

Every lease has a section on modifications and on the condition the car has to be in at return. Read it, or call the leasing company and ask plainly whether window tint is allowed and whether it has to come off at turn-in. Leases are not all the same, and it takes five minutes to know for sure.

If the dealer offers to tint the car before you drive off, ask what film it is. We have stripped dealer-installed film off late-model cars and replaced it, so "it came with tint" does not always mean it came with good tint.

Pick a legal shade

On a car you own, an illegal shade is your ticket to deal with. On a lease it can also be a problem at return. Arizona's rule is simple: front side windows have to let more than 33% of light through, back side windows and the rear glass can be any shade, and windshield tint is only allowed above the AS-1 line. The Arizona tint law guide has the details, and the shade pages show what each percentage looks like on a real car.

Pick film that comes off clean

This is where film quality matters on a lease. Cheap dyed film bakes in the sun, and its adhesive stays on the glass when the film comes off. That turns a simple removal into hours of scraping. Carbon and ceramic film hold up, which keeps a future removal straightforward. Those are the only kinds we install. See the carbon vs ceramic guide for how to choose between them.

What tint does for a leased car

A lease is judged on condition when it goes back. Film blocks 99% of UV, and UV is what fades seats and cracks dashboards in Arizona. So tint is not only for comfort while you drive it. It also helps the interior look the way it should on return day.

At turn-in

If the lessor is fine with the tint, you are done. If they want it off, book a removal before the return appointment. The film and adhesive come off and the glass goes back to stock. Removal is quoted per vehicle, and a photo helps us price it.

Getting a price

Send the quote form with the year, make, and model. Sheet prices for full vehicles, front twos, and sun strips are on the pricing page.

Leased car tint questions

Will tint void my lease?

Tint by itself usually does not, because film is a removable add-on and not a permanent change. Leases differ, though, so read the section on modifications or ask the leasing company before you book.

Do I have to remove the tint before I turn the car in?

Some lessors accept legal, clean tint and some want the car returned the way it left. If yours wants it off, removal is a normal job and it is quoted per vehicle.

Does removing tint damage the glass?

Done properly, no. The film and the adhesive come off and the glass is left clean. On the rear window the defroster lines need care, which is the part that goes wrong when film is scraped off at home.

What shade should I pick on a lease?

A legal one. Arizona front side windows have to let more than 33% of light through. Back side windows and rear glass can be any shade.
