Tint removal and re-tint in the 928, without wrecking your defroster

Gone purple
Dyed film breaks down under UV, and the dye literally cooks out until the film turns purple. At Prescott elevation that happens faster than the film's marketing promised.
Bubbling and peeling
When the adhesive fails in this heat, air gets under the film and it bubbles, wrinkles, and lifts at the edges. Past a certain point it is also a visibility problem, not just an ugly one.
Bad previous install
Contamination under the film, gaps at the edges, film cut on the glass and scratching it. Some installs are worth undoing even before they fail on their own. We see them all over the 928.
The removal itself is slow, deliberate work: the film comes off, the adhesive comes off after it, and the defroster lines on the rear glass survive both. Then the glass is prepped like new and ready for film that can handle Yavapai County sun.

Removal questions from the 928
Can I just peel old tint off myself?
You can peel the film, but the adhesive stays behind, and scraping it off the rear window is how defroster lines get destroyed. Getting the adhesive off clean without damage is most of the actual work.
Will removal damage my rear defroster?
Not when it is done with patience and the right method. The defroster grid is printed on the inside of the glass, exactly where the film sits, which is why we treat the rear window as the careful part of every removal.
Can you remove and re-tint the same day?
Usually, yes. Removal adds time to the job, but for most vehicles the strip and the new install happen in one visit.
