Tinting a Tesla Glass Roof
On most cars the roof is steel and the sun stops there. On a Tesla the roof is glass, and it sits a few inches over your head. The factory glass is tinted and it blocks UV, but in Arizona plenty of owners still feel heat coming through it on a summer afternoon. That is what roof film is for.
What film does on a glass roof
Roof film is the same heat-rejecting film that goes on side windows, installed on the inside of the roof glass. Ceramic film is the usual choice because it rejects infrared heat by how it is built, not by how dark it is. You can add heat rejection without making the cabin feel like a cave.
It also cuts glare. With a glass roof the sun can reach the screen and your eyes from angles a normal car never deals with.
What shade goes on the roof
The roof glass is already dark, so film stacks on top of that. One Model Y in the portfolio had 5% on the roof from a previous install. The owner had it taken off and replaced with 35% over the factory glass. Arizona has no darkness limit for roof glass the way it does for front doors, so the choice comes down to how much light you want in the cabin.
The rest of the car
Most Tesla jobs are more than the roof. Looking at the Model Y jobs in the portfolio, the common pieces are:
- Sides and rear hatch in one shade, so the car reads even all the way around.
- Front doors a step lighter. Arizona's front side windows have to let more than 33% of light through, so check the tint law guide before you copy a shade from a photo.
- Windshield film in a light shade for heat. Arizona only allows windshield tint above the AS-1 line, so ask us what is legal for yours.
The shade pages show what each percentage looks like on real vehicles.
Why the install takes patience
Tesla glass is big. The roof is one large panel, and on a Model 3 the rear window runs up into the roof as a single piece. Film for glass that size has to be shrunk to the curve and laid in one go, and any dust under it shows. That work is done in our enclosed bay in Prescott Valley, out of the wind.
The doors are frameless, which means the glass drops a little every time a door opens. Tell us it is a Tesla when you book, and we will go over how to treat the doors while the film cures.
Carbon or ceramic
Both are on the price sheet, and neither one is dyed film. For a car with this much glass, ceramic is where most of the heat difference is. The carbon vs ceramic guide explains why.
